Getting to Know You
As we begin our journey together we will spend a great deal of time together. It is time to get to know each other a little bit. During the first few days of school we will be doing a great deal of activities to learn more about each other.
A Star is Born
September 7, 2016
Introduction to A Star is Born activity. Students will work on a writing assignment so that we can see how they write and also learn a little bit more about them. The goal is to complete at least 3 paragraphs that include: introductory sentence, 3 pieces of information, and a concluding sentence. We also want to see the humour, charm and character of each of the students. They may need help with some of the stories (e.g., how their name was chosen), but please allow them the chance to do the writing on their own. This will give me a chance to see what needs to be taught as we move forward. Please see the assignment sheet and rubric. The script/paragraphs will be used as a writing sample and will serve as the foundation to their presentation. Students are asked to create some type of presentation to share with the class. Some suggestions have been: a children's story, a slideshow, video blog, collage, timeline, cereal box, etc. Get creative and keep it interesting! Due Date: September 21, 2017 for all rough work and paragraphs. Presentations to start this date as well and continue until completed. |

Pulse LearnStyle
Pulse LearnStyle is a set of activities that help to show what type of a learner you are. During these activities you will do audio, video and puzzle challenges to help the program learn about your learning. Please log in to the following to complete the activities:
halton.pulse.learnstyle.com/
Pulse Code for 61: 61HMRM
Pulse Code for 64: 642017
Pulse Code for 66FI: 66FI
After the first login, you will use your own password that you created. You can learn about strategies recommended to help you with different learning activities. For example, based on our class profile shown below, I might recommend using a cluster web and discussion map as strategies to help organize a research project. Not sure what those are? No problem because the LearnStyle page has information and a video about each learning strategy and also provides a suggested list of technology to use.
As a class average, both kinesthetic (movement) and auditory (listening) strategies are our strengths, while visual and sequential (ordering and solving problems) strategies are things we will need to develop more.

Brain Bootcamp
One of the ways we will be learning about each other, is through an online learning module called brain Boot Camp. This is a set of modules created to help students learn more about how their brain and body functions, during times of stress, and how to maintain a calm, alert, ready to learn status. The material used during this learning opportunity comes from the Hawn foundation and their MindUP! Curriculum. This curriculum has been developed through extensive research on brain function and will help to provide information and strategies for success. Students will work through blended learning environment, consisting of both online and in person activities. Students will enrol by joining the Canvas learning management system.

We will also be using a Growth Mindset Journal throughout the year. Students will need to download the resource from the following link. Once everyone has a copy I will be deleting this link as it was a paid resource and is copyright protected.

My Blueprint
My blueprint is a website that all students in Halton will use to develop a profile. Your profile can be used in many different situations, including student led conferences, as portfolios, and during high school years my blueprint is used to pick courses. As the year progresses, we will be developing our profile in the system.
